Postcard?

We've just been on holiday and I failed miserably to write any postcards to anyone. That implies I manage many normally (quite good at buying them, terrible at writing them). Anyway you can't fit much on a postcard so I thought I'd write an extended blog version!!

We went to Whangaruru Harbour (east coast between Whangarei and Bay of Islands), camping on a beachfront site. It was Easter weekend when we arrived and there was a fishing competition so the place was pretty packed- and the beach was basically a car park* for 4WD and tractors and their trailers- though not much good for beach stuff, it was fascinating for C to watch the boats coming in (especially when it involved a tractor!). We watched, eating possibly the best fish and chips I've had (sadly the weekend marked the end of the season and the fish and chip shop wasn't open later in the week!).

It was a lovely spot (if a little breezy or should I say pretty windy at times!), and we are pleased with our tent (not only was it a bargain at 60% off, it also serves us well!). After the first weekend we pretty much had the site to ourselves apart from a few campervans that came and went. ** Both children loved the space and being outside, and L liked walking up to the toilet block (or should I say hated being left behind when others went), actually she liked walking everywhere!!

The weather (aside from the wind) was good- a few showers, but pretty reasonable, and wonderfully warm at night (last few camping experiences having been Lake District and Scotland in September!!)- seemed odd to us that the season had ended!

We spent much time looking at the sea, playing on the beach (C overcoming his fear of the sea to drive trucks in and out of the waves, L gaining a fear of the sea having loved it all summer!!), discovering rock pools etc. It was a good relaxed time together (first time away for a week since Sept 06). Also got in a couple of walks- C doing really well especially on one of them which involved following orange triangles- walked well over an hour! And of course there was what is now becoming traditional paddle in a canoe (plus for me a swim in a choppy sea- no not from the canoe trip- out of choice!).

*fortunately after the weekend there were very few cars parked so we were able to use it as a beach!
**prompting great C discussions about different types and features of such vehicles!! Well most things prompted major discussions- L liked walking, C liked talking and has discovered the 'why' word- we did well to last without it so long!
