L has found a new occupation for the mornings- she brings me her gumboots (not wellies- they're people from Wellington!) with the expectation of going in the garden. After putting them on she takes my hand and leads me down the garden to the gate at the bottom. The other side of the gate is a piece of land that doesn't belong to the house but is basically bush and our predecssors cleared some of it and planted a bit of an orchard. So the new pastime is picking some satsumas which we then eat- yum yum! (The pukekos don't seem interested in citrus Yeah!).
That's not all that's growing- here's what we harvested the other day:

The red things are tamarillos (tree tomatoes) which I'm intending to make into chutney when I have the right combination of ingrdients and time, there's a few satsumas, the last (tiny) yellow pepper and two yellow beans (they're supposed to be yellow!) which is about the number we get from what's left of the 9 beans we planted (4 didn't come up, 2 were uprooted on too many occasions by pukekos and of the 3 remaining plants one has now been stripped I think by slugs, so not many meals for us!!). And the green stuff is New Zealand spinach, planted by my predecessor which goes on and on and is now palatable after all the rain...... (very nice in peanut butter sandwiches!!)
